A benchmark for late 20th and early 21st century Indian and Hindu identities, the Upanishads include some of the founding writings of Indian history and philosophy. From roughly 900 to 300 BCE, the early classical Upanishads were written, departing from the predominantly Vedic sacrificial perspective and incorporating a renunciant manner of life. The sacrifice and the power behind it are topics of speculation in the Upanishads. The word Upanisad has a disputed etymology, although it is widely considered to mean to sit down near(upa + ni + sad), indicating the intimate interaction between the learner and the teacher when the texts are being taught. According to several academics, the phrase refers to “a secret or esoteric teaching.” The Upanishads were a part of many Vedic schools, and they differ according to the emphasis each school placed on recitation and scholarship.
