The Balakanda of the Valmiki Ramayana tells the tale of Vishvamitra. The Mahabharata also states that Shakuntala, a daughter born to Vishvamitra and Menaka, is the subject of the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata.
King Vishvamitra, commonly known as Kaushika, ruled ancient India. He was a brave warrior and the great-grandson of Kusha, a famous monarch. The account of Vishvamitra is introduced in paragraph 51 of the Valmiki Ramayana, which begins, “There was a monarch named Kusha, the creation of Prajapati, and Kusha’s son was the mighty and really righteous Kushanaabha.” Gaadhi, a person of great renown, was Kushanaabha’s son; Gaadhi’s son is this great saint of immense radiance, Vishvamitra. Over many tens of thousands of years, Vishvamitra controlled the earth as the supreme ruler.
